Post-Op Instructions for Teeth Whitening

For Both In-Office and Take-Home Whitening

  1. Avoid Staining Foods and Beverages
For the next 48 hours, avoid consuming dark-colored foods and drinks, such as:
  • Coffee, tea, and red wine
  • Colas and other dark sodas
  • Berries, tomato-based sauces, and soy sauce
  • Dark chocolate and colored candies
  1. Avoid Smoking and Tobacco Products
Smoking or using any tobacco products can stain your teeth and reduce the effects of whitening. Try to avoid these products for at least 48 hours.
  2. Practice Good Oral Hygiene
Continue to brush and floss regularly, but use a soft-bristled toothbrush if you’re experiencing any sensitivity. Avoid toothpaste with high abrasives during the first few days, as this can aggravate sensitivity.
  3. Use a Desensitizing Toothpaste if Needed
Sensitivity to cold, hot, or air may occur after whitening. A desensitizing toothpaste can help alleviate discomfort. Brush with it for a few days until sensitivity subsides.

Additional Instructions for In-Office Whitening

  1. Avoid Extreme Temperatures
Since some sensitivity is common, try to avoid very hot or very cold foods and beverages in the first 24–48 hours.
  2. Touch-Up Whitening
Your dental professional may recommend at-home touch-ups to help maintain the whiteness. Follow their instructions if using take-home whitening trays or touch-up kits.

Additional Instructions for Take-Home Whitening Kits

  1. Follow Usage Instructions Carefully
Follow the provided instructions carefully to avoid overuse or overexposure, as this can cause irritation or increased sensitivity. Avoid contact of the whitening gel with your gums to prevent irritation.
  2. Storage of Whitening Gel
Keep any remaining whitening gel in a cool, dry place, and ensure the caps are tightly closed to prevent drying out.
  3. Frequency of Use
Do not use the whitening trays more frequently than advised, as overuse can lead to irritation and sensitivity. If sensitivity occurs, you may skip a day or use them for shorter periods until sensitivity reduces.
